SHAH ALAM: About 400 people gathered outside the Istana Bukit Kayangan here yesterday to hand over a memorandum pledging allegiance to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor as well as the nation’s Malay rulers.

The crowd, comprising Umno members as well as representatives from several Malay-based non-governmental organisations and Universiti Teknologi Mara students, also condemned DAP chairman Karpal Singh for threatening to take the Perak Sultan to court recently.

Carrying banners, the group walked about 500m to the palace gates to hand over the memorandum to the Sultan’s naval aide-decamp Commander Ahmad Ram li Kardi.

Selangor Malay Students Association president Datuk Dr Mat Yasir Ikhsan handed over the memorandum.

Other organisations that participated in the event were the Selangor chapter of the Federation of Peninsular Malay Students, Sela ngor Students Council, Universiti Tek nologi Mara Students Council, Organi sation of Islamic Missionaries and Welfare Malaysia (Pekida), the Sela ngor chapter of the Malaysian Silat Federation and Gerakan Belia 4B Se la ngor Shah Alam federation of non-governmental organisations.

Former Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, who was at the event, said no one should be allowed to show insolence to the Sultans.
